I was in today for a followup with my heart surgeon. Since I had asked him before when I could shoot we got to talking about rifles for about 45 minutes. (Feel sorry for the later appointments LOL) Anyway he asked about a Model 70 that he had in 7 mag that he had loaned to someone and they fired a 270 in it. He wasn't sure if it was a pre 64 but, said he had, had it for years. Anyway he said that there didn't appear to be any metal damage but the stock had spit underneath. Can't imagine there being to much pressure for the action. I assume the brass gave way and the gas excaped into the magazine area. Does the Model 70 have downward vent holes. Anyone have any experience with this type failure? I told him I would see if I could fix the stock. Least I could do after he spent 18 hrs fixing my heart.

I did that once in my Savage 110, no damage whatsoever (other than an induced flinch). The case ballooned at the expansion ring and blew out to one side. I still have the case. Shot the rifle for years after that, but did have to pick out little brass pieces from lots of different places with a dentist pick. HTH, Dutch.

Yikes, one of the worst mismatches is a 35 Remington in a 7mm Rem mag. It headspaces on the bullet. On firing very bad things happen.
