I was just wondering how much of a pain it would be. I have the action and have been thinking about it.

Depends on who does the job. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the worse pain, I would say that it could feel like a #2 or better.

Actually, It's a pretty straight forward and simple job and might hurt you somewhere between $150.00 - $450.00. Remember, no "pain" no gain...

Good luck,

Thanks for the info. I was wondering because I would like to do it myself. But if it was going to be too difficult then I would have to pass.

If you are handy with a lathe and can borrow the headspace gauges and reamer, it shouldn't be too big of a deal. You can rent the gauges and reamer, but then you need to ask yourself what your time is worth and what your expectations are (accuracy). Put it this way, of the actions available, you have one of the easiest to work with.

I don't have access to a lathe. I was looking in a reference book on gunsmithing, and was told that if I gave the company that makes the barrel measurments from the face of the receiver to the inner ring, and from the receiver face to the bolt face. Then all I would have to do is finish ream it to headspace. I want to know is it true, or am I a fool. About accuracy, if it was capable of 1 1/2" or less at 100yds then I would be more than happy, as I do not forsee myself shooting at anything further than 500yds.

j_dude,

I don't know which barrel company you talked to, but most of them know the thread shank dimensions for a post 64 Winchester 70, but if they don't then here they are.

Maj Dia .992
TPI 16
Shank length .702
Shoulder to bolt face approximately .860

This will give you enough of a margin to set the headspace. Accuracy will depend on a lot of things. A group size of 1 1/2" at 100 yards isn't much of a goal to shoot for(no pun intended).

Good luck,

Malm

Malm,

Thanks for the info. Iknow the 1 1/2 inch group is not that great. I am just saying if it shoots better than I would be happy. If it is under 1 in that great. As always everyone's insight and help is appreciated.
