Have any of you fellas ever converted a Sako AI/L461 from 222/223 to the PPC cases? I know Sako did make the AI in 6 PPC as I had one of the single shot versions a few years ago. They also made a repeater version.

. Well Rick, we did a couple PPCs back in the day on those little Sakos at The Custom Gun Shop for a guy when Erv bought all the Browning Mauser and Sako stuff from FN in Belgium. I don't recall any special problems at all. The guy we built them for died about 7 or 8 years ago and I'm not sure where all his guns went. I would run a few PPC rounds through the action to make sure they feed OK. Both the guns we put together were magazine fed. You're right Sako did make the 6 PPC in both magazine and the solid bottom action with the big beaver tailed stock for a while. When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years! Rod Henrickson

Not sure what I can do to help, but if you think of something let me know. I bought a Sako A1 action, probably 15 years ago. It was new in box. I had it made into a 22PPC. Sold it a couple years ago. And I bought a Sako A1 deluxe in 6 PPC. I had it rebarreled to 22 PPC and still have it. I also have a 223 and 17 in Sako A1. NRA Patron member

Rod, thanks for the info. There is a lot of conflicting info out there. Some say the mag box and follower will need lots of work or replacement, some say the feed rails will need work. Some say they will work as they are. I dug up a pic of a 222 and a PPC bolt face comparison and it looks as though the milling for the extractor is the same but the extractor itself is slightly different. I should probably leave the action alone as it's never been barreled and is "as new". A friend does have a 6-223 reamer and I should probably just go with that chamber. I have a 10" twist .243 Hart barrel that fits the channel quite well of a nice AI Hunter stock I've had for a few years. I've let too many of these little Sakos get away over the years and this makes #4 in the stable now. I have a factory AI in 17 Rem, one in 20 Extreme and an L461 in 223 that I just put a Gaillard barrel into a few weeks ago. I will be researching this further before I modify this action.

Yeah, feed is the big one. The PPCs don't feed well in anything. That same, short, fat, ugly problem that the ultra mags, short magnums and the 284 have. That's why I said to try the feed first to avoid the headaches. The bolt face would have to be opened up to .447 or .450 and you have to take about .030 off the extractor. I think you can just use a thin 7/16th diameter woodruff cutter to remodel the extractor if memory serves. I think they made the extractor cut depth the same in all of those and used that old style deep extractor. I think everything on those receivers can be cut with HSS. The material is tough, but not very hard. It's some sort of Pre-Cambrian, chrome vanadium, Zimbabwe death steel, if memory serves. When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years! Rod Henrickson

Not what you asked for but..... Here's a pic of a L491 follower and a mini mauser follower for a 7.62x39. The 491 follower worked up to the last round and I figure it would work for that one too if I trimmed the lip on the left side. I'm using it in a mini-mauser 6.5 grendel (parent case is a 7.62x39 same as the ppc)
