At least for twist, I can tell you, get a one in 8 in any 6.5 mm.

Skip the one in 9 twist. One in 7 is even better if you are going for 1000 yd bullets llike the 140s, 142, and 155 /156 grain bullets.

I can't say anything on shilen barrels. I have only ordered PacNor locally out of Brookings Oregon, but all have been very high quality for me, at what I consider reasonable prices.

Pac Nor has a lot of twist options on their barrels.

Good luck with it and welcome to the 6.5 mm club.

Cheers and Good shooting

I would have to respectfully disagree with the twist you recommend. Bullets have a tendency to come apart when spun that fast. Many times during 1K matches some have never reached the target. All you need is to keep the bullet stable, no more. Anything after stable induces more spin to cope with.

I have a 1/8 twist on a #5 shilen 260 rem. I love it. If my main goal was driving light bullets fast then the slower twist in 1/9 would be fine. Thoughs long matchkings need at least a 1/8 twist. I would pick the bullet you want then give shilen or Pac nor or whoever a call and talk about it.

A 6.5-284 will get higher vel. than a .260 Rem. If you use a 30" barrel you can get the heavy 6.5 bullets going pretty fast. I've built 1:8", 8.5" and 9" and all of them work. The Lilja in 1:9" or the Krieger 8.5" are the two that I like best. The IBS light gun record was shot with 147 Clinch River bullets in a Krieger 1:8.5" barrel. If I remember correctly.....
