I was just at a hawk shop looking at a pre war model 70 30,06 Sombody added a pad and the rear sight was missing.
The rear action has not been drilled and the only mounting holes are in the top front of the reciever and the 2 on the side for a peep.
the stock looks prety good it has the loop style sling swivels. the guy says I can have it for 700.00. I am thinking I will run and buy it, hell just the action has to be worth close to that , am I wrong ? I think i will go back with my brown book and see if its a true pre war or a transition rifle, how much difference does that make ?

I guess it would depend on what you had in mind. I wouldn't pay that as the stock is useless and really has zero value. "I take that back" sell the stock on ebay it will bring 50.00 or so.
My buddy just bought one yesterday, stock cut and sanded, all orignal, both f&r sights, no front hood and got it for 500.00. Plus the old fellow threw in a B&L mount.

Personally I would not touch anything at a pawn shop. 90% of or better of the stuff has been stolen from your neighbor's place and it's just supporting the cycle of crime. I have lots of friends that continue to shop there that's their right and I support they're right to do so and yours, but I will not shop there.

there's two separate things.....the blue book and your personal feelings.....for me this rifle is an action only and worth $500 tops.....

it's really how much you want it.....IMO there's better M-70s out there than pre war!

I agree with jimmd223. This price craze on pre-64,70's since the Winchester plant closed is rediculous. What now they are worth more since the plant closed but yet hasn't made any since 1964 anyway? I've been a collector and shooter of 70's for over 35 years. I'm not playing this game and you shouldn't be paying $700 for a incomplete non-original pre-war that is only worth the investment if it is mint and requires no E-bay parts.

You should check your facts on this. I know that in Louisiana the pawn shop has to hold the gun while the local sheriff does a background check on it. I think this is the case in most states. Or better yet stay out of the pawn shops and leave more for me. Also let me say I fell the same way about TV's, stereos, skillsaws etc. that stuff is hot. Especially the tools. Who in the world pawns somthing they use to make a living with?

I did not respond to the stay away from pawn shop post but it is not accurate. the pawn industy in oregon is well regulated and all firearms have to be held for 15 days, and cleard through the state police. and when you purchase one you have to pay 10.00 for a call to the state police, to check your record and have the serial # run...tj3006

TJ, you are right on with the pawn shop thing. I have bought a bunch of guns through pawn shops and the are very heavely regulated by the state here in Wa.

Buying a gun in a pawn shop in WA is just like buying a gun in a gunstore in WA, last time I did it.

Have you been to DJ's in Bothel?
They must have 1,000 guns in there.
