I have an FN mauser with the origional barrel marked .257 Roberts. After shooting my 1st round throught it today , I discoverd that it is no longer chamberd for the Roberts.
The fired case had the shoulder blown out and a couple splits in it. The new shoulder matched closly to the shoulder of the .270 win Rounds I had with me. I brought the rifle home and it chambers 25,06 rounds fine, although I had a little bit of feeding trouble.
It seems to me if I fire a 25,06 round in this chamber, the worst thing likly to happen is that I fire form the case, to what ever improved or pre sammi spec 25,06 chamber there is . The rifle was made in 1951. 17 years before the 25,06 was a factory round who knows when it was rechamberd. Does it seem like a dangerous situation to you ? ...tj3006

Well there are a lot of mights and maybe's to answer your question but the safest way to really know with out an accident would be to cast the chamber with "cerrosafe" or some other chamber casting material and then measure up your casting matching it to the 25/06 that you suspicion it to be.
Be safe........

I suspect a gunsmith would do a chamber cast for you and the cost would be about $40.

Seems well worth the money...oh I forgot

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

if it was mine I'd remove the barrel and simply rechamber it to 25-06 and reinstall the barrel.....then remark the stamp on the outside of the barrel.

I would not fire it again unless with a string from behind a secured place.

Sounds like someone rechambered it and didn't mark the new caliber on the barrel. Someone stupid enough to rechamber a rifle from one caliber to another without remarking the barrel, just might be stupid enough to have screwed something else up. I would have it checked out before firing it again.

I would take it to a gunsmith and have him figure all this out for you.

Better yet, if you can return the rifle to the last owner and get a refund I'd go this route. It's not what it was presumed to be and IF it is a .25-06, it has feeding issues, not to mention the lost value from being modified. God forbid it's an Ackley improved.

That's exactly why I suggested it be simply rechambered.....

The suggestion of returning it is also good.....it was misrepresented!!!!

That said rebarreling is also an option.

DANGEROUS HEADSPACE!!! Standard practise was to check all used guns being traded into the store before a deal was made to see if the chamber was as stated. The value of the gun is based upon a known caliber. I would never fire any used gun before giving it a good test. I once had a chance to buy a good fn action, but close exam showed it had been in a fire. You never know, so always check these guns first.
