of Roy, Utah, (at least in the last few years) I believe. I think he may be recently deceased. I understand he made his own barrels as well as being an all around riflesmith/stockmaker, any comments on the man, the quality of his work and/or his barrels would be appreciated.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

I wasn't aware that asking about a custom gunmaker was political but if my tag line bothers you, well, be pissed off then. Drink some on me.

I met Mr. Spencer at a gun shop in Utah in 2001 while working at Hill AFB. I purchased a 257 roberts from him that was built on a VZ24 action with a Shilen barrel. He was first and foremost a stockmaker but the metal work on my rifle is first class and it flat shoots. The stock is a laminated that was checkered by someone else and I don't remember the name. He would not checker laminates. I don't think he made his own barrels. He had a shop in his basement. To spend any time with him was an experience. Great guy and I'm sorry to hear that he has passed away.

Regards,

Bob

Thanks for the info.

The "passed away" is third hand info and may not be (hopefully isn't) correct. According to my source, some friends visited him over a year ago and he was in bad shape and had built himself a coffin!

I guess I'll be able to comment further on his gun/stockmaking skills more in a few days. I just bought 4 of his rifles!

BTW, there is one left that I know of, in .30-06, Mauser action, commercial I think, green laminated stock with a black "stripe" about a inch and half wide about 4 or 5 inches back from the stock tip, different and looks better than it sounds if you want a green rifle, stock wood was supposedly made by him, one piece scope mount, no scope, price is $650, appears little used from pics, but it is not a real close up. If anyone is interested I can put them in touch with the seller.

Well, first of all, I haven't received them yet as I mentioned above indirectly ("in a few more days").

Second, while I've got some files on some of them, I don't have a clue how to post them or any other pics. I thought I'd try to learn when I bought the last 3 or 4 digital cameras but haven't.....an old dog and all that. My wife handles most of the computer/digital end of imaging around here.

Finally, I'm not sure the tone of your post is not suggesting that I'm not telling the truth, so, if that's the case, why don't you just join Mr. Wiebe and have some on me. If I've misinterpreted your post, my apologies.

If you decide you want to post some pictures you can email them to me and I will do it. My email address is in my profile.

I'm sure that you are looking forward to receiving them -- four at one time beats my record by quite a bit!

I'm usually touchy when I'm near drowning from the monsoon season in Texas. I can't cut hay, shred pastures, or work cattle. All I have to do is try to convince my wife to go back to bed and she keeps telling me, "Not AGAIN!", clap which doesn't do much to improve my mood.

I apologize again.

I've sent the pics to Mr. Helm, perhaps he can post them for me.

Here are some pictures of my Spencer VZ24 in 257 Roberts

He made this rifle in 2000/2001. The laminate blank was from Weinig's and he trimmed it in bloodwood.

I'm normally not much on non-traditional styled rifles, but that green rifle and the 257 Roberts trimmed in blood wood are really neat!

RE: the blank from Weinigs - any idea what pattern? That is nicely shaped.

The other rifles are very nice too.

TMG:

The "green" rifle is kinda growing on me too. But then again, considering the amount of rain we've had in the last few months, it is probably just mold. clap

I have no idea what the pattern was for the stock. Jim just told me he used Weinigs because he thought they were the most suitable for the work he did.
