Just got my hands on one for the 416 Taylor. It really adds to the appearance of the rifle, with it's slightly lower profile. Very nice, can't wait to get it fitted.

Anyone else had experience with this item?

Todd these are very nice indeed. Sometimes fitting is very minimal & sometimes not. It just depends on the tolerances of the indivual rifle you are fitting it to.

Todd---

I fit a LOT of PME safeties.

It's VERY important that the angle on the cocking piece is ground accurately.

The cocking piece should be cammed back by about .020". If it's not ground accurately there's a danger of galling.

It's best to use the PME fixture on a surface grinder to fit them......if not be SURE you have a couple extra cocking pieces handy. You'll probably need them.

I have a question about Mauser safeties that will probably show I'm a relatively new owner of my first Mauser rifle. It's an FN Mauser in 404 Jeffery.

My question is this, is there an aftermarket safety more "scope friendly" than the standard safety?

I haven't yet attempted to do so but I'm assuming I will have minimum clearance (perhaps less than minimum) between the safety and the scope when mounted.

The rifle came with a set of Talley bases and rings and I plan to mount a 1.5-5x20 Leupold on this rifle.

Do these aftermarket safeties require any alteration to the rifle itself other than removal of the standard safety? If so, I probably just won't bother and leave the rifle alone.

Thanks in advance.

Reed, there are numerous safeties available for the Mauser. They range from dirt cheap to quite expensive. Some work on the trigger only, some replace the stock safety, with little or minimal fitting, and some turn into major projects. As mentioned in the earlier post, getting the dimensions correct (and the angles)is usually the toughest part of the job. I suggest you go to the Brownells site and browse all the safeties. Having a safety that isn't safe really isn't what anyone wants, but with some thought and attention, it can certainly be done by a person handy with tools. - Dan

I put a PME a VZ-24 last year. I like the 3 pos safety a lot. Makes it work just like a M70, and looks good to. The only problem I had was I left the pin that holds the safety lever out while the rifle was getting blued and lost the pin. It took about 3 or 4 weeks to get another, but PME sent it no charge.

I just installed this beauty today. It went smoothly, that is, after the trip to Home Depot to get a carbide bit for the bolt relief. Unbelievably hard. At least I know it didn't get annealed when the handle was welded on.

It sure does look slick. This is dangerous financially, as I have three other Mausers with stock or ugly aftermarket safeties...
