I had Royal make up a few "specials" that I use in the barrel channel and recoil lug areas. They work good, and as Ray mentioned, are a nice complement to the Jerry Fisher scrapers.

Here is one opinion, it is worth what it cost you to view it.

I have not used these tools, but I am sure they are made of the proper steel to keep an edge, and would serve you just fine. Where is the satisfaction in that?

You identify yourself as a "hobbiest" that gives you the advantage of time to learn. If you want to learn any craft, you start with the basic tools. You could easily make the tools you need, and develop your own techniques for carefull wood to metal fit. There are several excellent books, both old and new that give details of the "tricks" of both tool making and action fitting. Inletting a stock is not black magic, in fact it is not even much of an art since the advent of good bedding compounds.

My advise; get a standard book, a small Mapp gas torch, some drill rod and old saw blades. Learn to shape, temper and draw them. Learn to sharpen and keep them sharp. You can have a quality set of functional tools in no time and will have started to learn a craft. You will be far ahead of most hobbiests, and many "in the trade".

I buy good steel old screwdrivers at Pawn shops and heat the end and bend them and shape them to my desired form, then harden and sharpen...I have many many of these, and if I find a spot that needs special attention, I will make another to fit that need....I also keep on hand some of those Jerry Fisher scrapers from Brownells, they are cheap and work very well indeed....save yourself some bucks...

Inletting is a pretty easy art, most all stockmakers are pretty darn good at it..patience and a few tricks tossed in and your good...Its not the voodoo its made out to be...best to get some instruction from a good stockmaker hands on....
