I am curious to here what folks think about the two variations of quick-detach scope mounts offered by Griffin & Howe. http://www.griffinhowe.com/g&hscopemounts.cfm Anyone using them? Good, bad indifferent? Thanks, Dave

The side mounts are outstanding if used properly. You must have 100% metal to metal contact to keep the mount from moving under recoil. It must be milled to the exact contour of the receiver. The post war Mannlicher-Schoenauers have a flat side with removeable plate to accept the mount, so they work great on those rifles. The ACGG .35 Whelen had the mount welded on, also a great method. The biggest mistake folks make is letting "Bubba" install it. Some fool takes a file and scrapes a rough groove in the mount, then uses a s---load of screws and pins to try to stabilize it. If you let G&H or a pro do it, they are excellent mounts for a classic rifle, especially ones with logos or engraving on the receiver rings. [ 05-01-2003, 08:58: Message edited by: KurtC ]

I have two samples of the G&H mounts. I also have seen a third stlye with windage adjustments on the rear ring. The common two lever you see have the rounded pear shaped end, that have cut checkering on them. There is another shape of the levers, they look like the top half of a fish tail. They come together with a small gap between the levers. These were made in the 50's and 60's for rifle scabards. The trick is to have the sub base fit up tight and solid. Then have the upper half fit just right to take up the recoil. If anyone needs 30mm ring for them drop me a line.
