What sized Badger rings will I need for a remington heavy barrelled .243 with the 50mm leupold, they have an .823" & .885" am thinking I would get away with the .823"

Will they fit warne bases ?? or do you need the piccatinny rail ??

The height of your rings will depend on the height of your base, as well as the size of the objective bell on the scope. Bases come in all different heights/thicknesses.

Take your scope and a caliper and see how far above the top of the base the center line of the scope has to be in order to have the bell clear the barrel. A .885†ring on a thick base is obviously going to be allot higher than the same ring on a thinner base would be. The ring height is measured from the top of the base to the center of the ring. Badger standard rings have a height of .823â€, the medium’s are .885, the medium-high is 1.0â€, and the high is 1.125â€. They also have an Ultra-high...but those are mainly for something like an AR-15 style rifles.

I believe that Badger rings will fit Warne bases. Picatinny rails are nothing more that Weaver style bases with cross slots running the full length of the base...and Warne bases will accept any Weaver type ring.

PC ,
If Badger measure from the top of the base as do Warne then you will end up with only about 8 thou clearance with the 0.823 rings .
I have Warne bases with medium Warne Maxima rings . These are 0.375 from base to bottom of scope tube . Add 0.590 (15mm) to reach centre of the scope tube and you get a total of 0.965 .
With my 6.5 - 20 x 50 LRT Leupold this gives clearance of about 0.150 on my Rem 700 which should have a similar barrel profile to yours . Suggest that if Badger measure the same way as Warne then you should go with at least the 0.885 ring which will still only give about 70 thou clearance . The 1 inch high ring will still only give 0.185 clearance which isn't too high and will give you a bit of room for a slightly heavier straight taper profile if you ever rebarrel .
You're the one that wants to see his target hits remember . Heavier barrel will help when you wear out the original .

The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood.

Badger measures their height from the top of the mount to the center of the ring... while I believe Warne measures height from the top of the mount to the bottom of the ring.

At the risk of starting a big argument over better/best...have you considered Leupold bases and rings? You can go to Leupold’s web site and use their mount/ring selector chart to pick the bases and rings that will work with your rifle/scope combination, and be assured that they will fit and give you the proper clearances.

If you don’t like Leupold rings and bases, then use either Badger or Warne rings and bases.

Why use one brand of base and another brand of ring, unless there is a specific reason to do so?

Bush Chook,

I purchased a set of 1.00" Badger Rings, and will shop around for the Badger Base, as the shop I purchased from did not have the bases in stock. I also want a little clearance as you said for the heavier barrel down the track and also to get some lens covers on.

Thans Rick & BC.
