I have 6Br I just built and the throat needs to be longer so the bullet wont be seated so deep in the case. I ordered a throater from brownells. Can I use this by hand or should I take the barrel back off and chuck up into the lath? I need to make the throat .170 longer. I am thinking if I go slow and careful that I should be able to do this by hand as the throating reamer has a pilot. What would you suggest. Thanks for your reply!!!!!

I throat to a depth of .210 to use 107 Sierras but stop at .155 for 70s. If your barrel is a 14 twist, you can't use anything heavier than 70s anyway. I like my throats a little longer than most of my fellow competitors. Pull the barrel off and use a case with a bullet seated as you want it to gauge the amount you have to lengthen the throat. Mount the barrel in the lathe then feed the throater in slowly while supporting it on the tailstock center and holding it in your fingers. You will feel when the reamer makes contact with the lands then you will feed the reamer in slowly the required amount. If youlike, you may back off a turn after contact then speed up the spindle for the cut. This gives a better finish. The reason you don't run fast when approaching the lands is that it is harder to feel the first contact when the lathe is running faster. Regards, Bill.

Ok thanks! The barrel is a 1 in 8 twist. I built this rifle for shooting out to 1000yds. Alot of people are using a 6BR with 1 n 8 twist shooting 107gr sierra's with great results. Out of a 30 inch barrel they are getting 2950 FPS and very good groups. Thanks for the reply!

Mrgunslinger-- 2950 fps from a 107 grain bullet is HOT for a 6mm Remington, much less a 6mm Remington BR that has 32% less case capacity !!!

It may be Jack, but they are getting it. Check out the new kid on the block, the 240 NMC

We are talking about a 30 inch barrel.

Extra barrel is wasted when there's not much powder. I'd REALLY like to know what loads you're stuffing in these things.

Jack, I think most guys are shooting around 29.5 of Varget or 30 of RL15. I personally think about 2850 is impressive enough but I know some who are approaching 3000. Pressures are undoubtedly high but brass life is good. It is S.O.P. to bush the firing pins on M70s, otherwise the primers will blank before working pressures are reached. As I said, even 2850 is impressive considering the size of the case but it is a real over acheiver. I built a couple of 6mm Rem AIs with 28" barrels and they were hard pressed to exceed 3100 with 107s. At the same time I built a 6BR with a 27 1/2 inch barrel and he was getting 2920 with the same bullets.I shot this rifle at an "F" class match at the owner's request and was able to tie for first after one days shooting. I felt that I lost about 4 points to the wind at 900 meters that I might have gotten if I had been shooting my 6.5x55 but who knows. Anyway, the 6 BR is very impressive. The same is true of the 22BR. It comes so close to the 22-250 in performance that it is really hard to call. I have one for myself but I have made so much fun of guys for shooting a girl's cartridge that I can't use it. Maybe if I stamp the barrel "6BR Xtreme Magnum" or something. Regards, Bill

Thanks Bill-- For the first time in years I nearly got a cravin' for one but it passed. I think........ It WOULD be cute in an old 84 Kimber shooting 55 gr Noslers........... OR a shortened 1910 Mex....... OOOOOOHhhhhh, I have a 1903 Turk with the big ring and little thread and a high clip guide.....I could shorten that and put a square bridge on the back with something unusual for a scope mounting system and a hollow bolt....maybe blind with NO BOX....that's it! A "K" Mauser square bridge, light express rifle, but a solid bottom single shot varminter inside... I have a 7/8" 6x steel-tube Alaskan around here somewhere. I have a 1-12 Douglas xx .0003 over. It's a blank....hmmm, wonder if its big enough to get a quarter rib out of it made intergral, of course.... Now ya done it!! I LOVE it. Can I rent a reamer from you? Thanks.
