I want to pour one on a muzzleloader. Cerosafe would certainly work. I am afraid it might oxidize in a weird way and look funny. I do have a bunch of linotype metal. It has a slightly lower melting temp as pewter. My research indicates pewter is a term for a range of lead alloys. Some of the new stuff, marketed as pweter, seems to be mostly Tin and silver (read that as lead free solder), maybe that would work well. I am afraid of charring the wood. I was thinking of making an mould out of heavy duity aluminum foil and tape. I recall an old book suggesting paper and string. I do plan to do some practice runs on a junk stock and barrel.

Anyone ever done this? Can you give me some guidance?

Just a suggestion for a "mold." Brownells acra-glass (or just about any other brand of bedding material) is great for making quick and heavy duty molds.

With the material you plan on using it shouldn't be much of a problem to file and sand the outside to the desired shape once you have the inside molded to fit the area you want to place it on.

Thanks,

They were normally moulded in place, right around the stock and barrel.
