I have a friend who just purchased a M98 sporter and he would like to know more about it. I haven't seen the rifle other than in photos. It is based on a M98 military action with the stripper hump milled off, the bottom of the bolt knob checkered, the outside of the trigger bow engraved and a sporter stock fitted. It has been rebarreled to .270 Win. About the only distinguishing feature that may separate it from a multitude of spoterized Mausers is the 'RH. Spezial' that is stamped on the barrel. Does anyone have any thoughts on the origins of this rifle? If It Doesn't Feed, It's Junk.

Need to see the code on the top of the front ring if there are any left & not polished off. Doug Humbarger NRA Life member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club 72'73. Yankee Station Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Might be a Globe. They didn't do much except put on a sporter stock and blue them.

Looks like a real live German made 98 action. Doug is right though...you'll need to get the code off the receiver ring before we can figure out which factory made it and in what year. Jason "Chance favors the prepared mind."

Also agree on seeing the code from the top of the receiver - Hmmm? Plus anything else from the sides or underneath the action and barrel indicating German Proof Marks. "Spezial" is definately the Teutonic spelling for "Special". The .270 Winchester chambering would indicate North American as opposed to European though. Did a quick German Google for "RH Spezial" and got a hit for "R-H Special" a Nordrhein-Westfalia Aluminum Pressure Smelting company. Have Fun! Cheers, Number 10

The fact that there are no locking screws about the guard screws should have helped but I still don't know.....ring any bells folks? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Probably not the original guard, by the looks of the guard screw. They have the lock cuts. Turk 38 guard or welded up prior to ingraving are my guesses. -Don

Does it have any of the proof marks on the right side of the reciever or have they been polished off. If those are still there it might give a clue. Rad NRA Benefactor Member
