.300 Weatherby to .300 H&H

I have a weatherby vanguard in .300 Weatherby in need of some love (a rebuild and re-blue). I am a fan of classic cartridges and have customs in a few ie: .250-3000, 7x57, 9.3x62.

Will this action feed .300 H&H rounds without modification ? The only possible problem I see could be the narrower case of the H&H just below the shoulder.

Can someone with both, please try this in their rifle please.

Years ago I had a 300 H&H re-chambered too 300 Weatherby and it fed beautifully without modification. It would seem to me that if it worked in this direction it may well work in the reverse. Just one view...

A Model 70 I had (the older Push Feed model) in 300 Winchester had trouble with 375 H&H. At the time I wanted to have a Model 70 in 375 but with the standard rear receiver ring....for scope mount bases.

375s would not feed properly. Often two cartridges would pop up.

But it depends on the rifle. For example I have found Rem 700s seem to feed a wide range. I had a Rem 700 in 416 Rem and it would feed 270 Win perfectly. Did it with the rifle in vertical position so the 270s could drop when pulled the bolt back.

If I was you I would try and get hold of a few 300 H&H rounds so you can try them.

Just my personal opinion but to me a Made in Japan Vanguard in 300 H&H just don't go together Smiler

If I had the money I would like to do the following:

1) Get H&H to make me a 30/378 Wby.

2) Get Wby to make me a 404 Jeffery.

The 465 H&H (the newer bolt action calibre) is interesting because Roy had the H&H cases as his basis and H&H have the 378 Wby case as their basis Big Grin

Take a few 300 H&Hs and see if they feed, if so the all you need to do is re-barrel it to 300 H&H.

I'm pretty sure they will as it has always been customary to fireform factory 300 H&Hs in the 300 WBYs in years past.

Many a pre 64 Win mod. 70 30-06 has been rechambered to a 300 H&H, with only a tad of magazine work and opening the rear ring on the right side so as not to interfere with ejection is an option of desireability. Also a half hole cut in the rear of the front ring is a good idea but not required..

I like your choice in calibers! I personally would not want them in the WBY rifle, in that classic calibers should be in classic rifles like the mod. 98 Mauser customs or Winl mod. 70 pre 64s a distant second..but I bow to nostalgia in almost all cases, its a curmudgeon thing I suppose! Eeker

Well I bought a box of Hornady .300 H&H rounds loaded with 180 Interbonds and they feed, chamber and extract fine.
They should fireform as well.

Ray, I am sure you must know it takes a helluva lot more than that to turn an '06 into a magnum; bolt face, extractor, feed rails, follower, etc, etc.

Yes, I was also wondering where those bits went missing. I thought it might have only applied to the Australian versions Big Grin
