I found a Orberndorf commercial actioned rifle today. The action has been drilled and tapped for claw mounts at one time as the rear receiver bridge has 4 holes N/S,E/W and 3 inline holes in the front receiver bridge. The bolt handle is reformed for scope mounting. It does have original commercial bottom metal with trigger guard bow release. Can the action be salvaged with square bridging?? square shooter

yes, that would be a very good way to put it right

Mark, this is a commercial action in the 91,000 range and according to my measurements is slightly shorter, by 1/16" than any of my other original Orberndorf mausers. What's up with that?? square shooter

I think the action could be "salvaged" quite nicely without having to add square bridges. Aut vincere aut mori

Is the front ring longer than the other mausers too?

Z1R- you are quite correct! Welding up the holes in the rear bridge would be faster and cheaper. But I am ALWAYS looking for an excuse to square bridge a Mauser . I sure am not an authority on the variations of Mausers. Do you have the Speed and Olson books? I always look in there if I see something I don't understand.

No it isn't longer. I don't have any that are this way and I have 25 or so. Could it be an intermediate action? Did they do that on the commercial line? Can the extra hole in the front receiver ring be filled or perhapse left alone and covered with a custom Talley base??? That rear bridge has to be modified also. I am sure the rifle had claw mounts at some time in its life and were removed stateside to make room for standard bases and rings. square shooter

they made intermediate length commercial actions, but they were more than 1/16" shorter. Can you post a pic of the action and holes? And yes, you can weld up holes in the front ring, make custom bases, or a lot of other things. I think the best thing to do is double square bridge it! Many, many rifles are out there with extra holes covered up by scope bases.

I believe that dismisses the possibility of it being intermediate length. IIRC, the front ring on the intermediates is longer than the std 98.
