I just aquired an Old M-70 Winchester .300 H&H all in original configuration. The old laquer type finish is flaking off on the stock and I am going to refinish it. Should I go ahead and glass bed it too?

And, what is the "BEST" and easiest to use bedding compound???

If you are going to refinish it then I would bed it if you are going to hunt with it or shoot it much.....I don't know about the "best" but Brownells Accra Glass GEL is very good and is some of the easiest to work with that I and some friends have used......just get the amounts equal by volume and mix for a couple of min without whipping in bubbles and use TWO coats of release agent and don't forget to do the clay in the holes/mag well and it flows well without being runny and that makes it easier than standard Accra Glass to me.....I love my old 1953 mod 70 300 and good luck and good shooting!!

Absolutely and Brownells gel acraglas is the one to use IMO.

Yep, Accraglass glass gel works good. It works great for mixing just enough to do small areas.

Save the old pre64 winchester finish and chips when you strip it and try and sell the old original finish on ebay

See how it shoots before you glass bed the rifle. If it is a tack driver, I would leave it as it, it would certainly be more original.

Yes, it is very good! But I use Brownells steel bed for almost all my rifles.

If you bed it use the acraglas Gel and it has a consitency like peanut butter and easy to use. A savings tip is to use a measuring spoon from Wally world that is smaller than the one they send you. The measure they send uses too much and a lot is wasted. Of course they want you to run out fast so they can sell more.

I use Acra Glas Gel from Brownells, but when Devcon 'Plastic Steel' came out back in the 50's I thought it would be a fine bedding compound and I had never even heard of bedding a rifle. I did 2 stocks with it but the customers didn't like it as it was gray when they took the gun out of the wood and I couldn't figure a way to stain it to a walnut color. I lived in mississippi and thought this would be a fine way to seal for moisture and also not have to be too acurate in the inletting. At that time i never thought anyone else would be dumb enough to use it. I gave it no more thought till I was visiting Louis Mrace in Trinidad and he was bedding a target rifle in Devcon. Tried Acraglas but made a holy mess with it till they came out with the Gel form. I'm probably a majority of one when it comes to bedding. I don't care how fine the inleting is I still prefer FULL glass bed of barrel and action. I have found all my rifles shoot better with full bedding. I know that is definitely in the minority.
