What would be a fair price for an FN action sitting inside a Sears stock with an '06 barrel attached? I know where a Sears 51 is available and need another donor rifle since a pre-64 WInchester accidentally got sold while waiting for me to rescue it. Ed

Big Ed--

FN actions of that period had a $250 price tag on them at the last Boise gun show....figure $20 for the barrel and about that for the stock and you have a $300 fair price for the gun.

Compared to what you get in a new rifle, they're great bargains.

Ditto Jack Belk's reply. I buy lots of them, generally pay $200-$350, depending on the rifle. If only for the action, $200-$275.

My understanding on the JC Higgins (Sears) FN actions is that the scope mount screw spacings are different on these as opposed to the "real" (for lack of a better word) FN actions.

Something to think about...Someone correct me if I'm wrong. JP

The rear spacing on some Higgins actions is longer than standard. Standard is 1/2", the longer ones are 3/4", or maybe 5/8" or 7/8", I can't remember exactly. Standard front spacing is 7/8". If you are making custom bases, it doesn't matter, or when you order bases just specify the spacing.

I've had the opportunity to buy three of these rifles in the last year, and all of them have had three [Mad] [Mad] [Mad] holes in the rear bridge!!!

All were 30'06; some of the stocks were presentable, one was layed out very well (as far as grain flow and being quarter-sawn).

All had a scope (two steel-tube Weavers, one Tasco 3x9).

All seemed to be "staight" (not buffed beyond repair). Only one still had the FN trigger hinged off the trigger guard, the other two had replacement triggers from Dayton.

The most paid for any of them was $225.

I think you will find that they have gone up latly, I have been seeing them for $350 to $400 latly, In the Gunlist and even at gun shows...Also noticed that the Savage 99's and Rem. 722's have taken a jump....Why I don't know????

The longer hole spacing in the rear was for a (factory or distributor?) set of Q.D. dovetail bases that required a weaver style ring with no crossbolt in the bottom for recoil. The bases had a stop surface built in them. The one that I have has a Weaver 2.5 with a brass turret installed on it.

The whole package appears to be original in that all of the parts seem to have always been together. I suspect that the three holes were a "crossover" to allow Weaver and other bases to be installed.

The JC Higgins M50 trigger is a piece of $&%*. Replace the trigger with a good aftermaket one.

There are two hole spacing on these. .504 in the rear, and .860 in the front. These were the first couple of years and are the same as the FN.

Then they went to their own scope mounts, which used a .875 spacing both front and rear. These are the most common. You are talking custom bases here, as nothing fits them.

The JC 50 is a basic FN mauser with a couple of changes.

The J C Higgins 51 could be a Improved Husky action. Check to see were the safety is.

The M50 safety is on the sleeve and locks the cocking piece. The action is a large ring.
The Husky saftey is a sliding safety on the RH side of the tang. The action is also a small ring.

A friend has a Colt model of 57 or something that has a Mauser action and made in belgium on the side. Is this the same action as the J.C. Higins? He wants 350 for it. but it would definetly need new wood.

Bia- same action. The Colt F.A. Manufacturing Co. stamp on the barrel makes it somewhat desirable to people who like anything Colt. $350 is an OK price as long as the metal is sound, 95% finish or better, doesn't need rebluing, stock not as important.

Does anyone know where I can get a takeoff stock for one of these Sears/FN rifles? I have acquired a commercial FN action in excellent condition that was supposedly from a Colt rifle. The serial number is 45XX. Can anyone tell me when it was made? Thanks. Greg

FN's, next to Brnos, are my favorite commercial Mausers. The two on the right are factory Deluxe Sporters (244Rem & 30-06), the one on the left is a Marlin M-455 with stainless Marlin MicroGroove barrel.

What are the factory Huskies Worth? No holes in receiver for scope mounts. Just holes in right side for the peep.

Factory HVA FN's with walnut stocks in NRA excellent, unaltered, probably $450 area; perfect-like new, a little more. If you have one that isn't drilled or tapped, leave it that way.

Scroll- An untapped receiver can be used to build an open sight express-style rifle, otherwise you must weld up the holes. Untapped receivers are also kinda unique, especially for collectors.

FLA,
Worth of FN commercial depends on caliber.. A 404 Jefferys will bring an easy $2000 and a 375 will bring $1500...I have sold several of them for that and see several in the gunlist and on the internet for that price.

A 250-3000 will fetch an easy $1200 to $1500 depending on condition. A 7x57 will do the same.

The ordinary calibers will bring $450 to $600...
