Remington bolt shroud interchangeability

Strange question but here goes:
Will bolt shroud from a Remington 40X rimfire interchange with a regular Remington 700 bolt shroud?

Here is why I'm asking:

I'm in the process of building a USMC M40 .308 replica. It's not going to be a 100% correct rifle but I would like to get close on the obvious pieces.

One area is the bolt shroud. The original USMC M40 rifle had the old style 700 bolt shroud. It was very short. When the rifle was cocked the cocking piece stuck out the back of of the shroud about 1/2". The old shrouds are sort of hard to find these days. PT&G sells Remington bolt shrouds. They have one that goes on the 40X rimfire that looks just like the old style 700 shrouds. I talked to Carlynn at PT&G about them today and she got both out and looked them and said they look very close but couldn't guarantee it would work because it was only listed for the 40X rimfire.

It's a long shot but, if anyone knows.....

Thanks,
Terry

My Remington factory repair manual shows different part numbers for the 40-XB rimfire and the 40 XC/700 Centerfires. What the difference is between the two I can't say without seeing them. Shouldn't be too tough to make one. Perhaps even turn a current version down. And, why not make it 100% correct?

Terry,
I don't know, but my 40X rimfire has a Kiff 3 pos safety that was made for a centerfire. I will check but think it doesn't matter.

Thanks guy's. tu2

The reason I'm not shooting for a 100% correct rifle is the cost. One of the Redfield 3-9X40 Accu-Range scopes with the correct anodized green color are running $5000-$7500 these day's. I have the correct scope but it's not the correct color. Frowner I've seen some that have had thier scopes coated O/D green but they just don't look right to me. I found a guy that will re-anodize the scope the correct color but it has to be dissassembled first. There is a company that still works on these scopes but when I ask them to dissasemble and reassemble after it was anodized they weren't interested.

A few small things like mentioned above are keeping it from being a 100% correct rifle but I think it'll be close enough for me. I'd like to get the correct bolt shroud (or close to it), have the loading port scalloped, have the clip slot cut and put in the correct stock finished in linseed oil. I'll probably just punch paper with it at the range anyway Cool
