Since it appears I'm stuck with this model 7 .223 with an 18" bbl. What could it be rebarrelled to ? My main concern is there enough bolt face and rail space to open it up to something based on the .308 case ? or does anyone have a longer .223/ .222 Rem bbl they would sell at a reasonable price that would fit a model 7 ?

I'm REALLY puzzled......if you don't like short barrels on a carbine, WHY did you buy it?
Why not buy a rifle instead?

Any M-700 barrel will fit it but if you're going to a bigger bolt face you'll need a Sako-style extractor.

Do you buy a VW bug when you REALLY wanted a dump truck?

I'd drive that 18" barrel acrost the chrony a couple of times before you trash it. I have a model 7 in 7-08 with a 18" barrel and you can't tell the diffence between the deer I've killed with it and other longer rifles. I can't remember exactly how much mileage I lost but it wasn't much. [Big Grin]
Make me a good price and I'll buy it from you.

Mr. Belk, my wife asked me the same question. I honestly don't know. I've been a rifle nut for over 50 yrs. and I just can't seem to pass up a bargin. I like shooting them, hunting with them, it just gives me pleasure. The problem is I'm economically depressed( most school teachers are)and I can usually own only a few rifles at a time so I trade or what ever to try and get what I think I want within my budget. After a while some one convinces me I need something else so I try to find a way to get it only to end up finding I didn't need it after all. Guess I should have listened to Jack O'Connor, one can get by pretty well with a good 06, a 12 gage and a .22 By the way Mr Belk, I'm always appreciative of your thoughtful comments and insights.

I'd go for 7mm TCU. This is such a bad addiction, isn't it? [Big Grin]
