Drilling a Springfield

I had a guy bring me a pretty original looking Springfield today and wanted me to drill it for a scope. I talked him out of it. Now I'm not sure if I should have done that. If it was mine I wouldn't drill it but it's not mine. Was there a carbine model made? If so this could have been one, I don't know much about these rifles.

If your talking about 1903, 1903A3, etc. Springfields they all had 24" barrels from the arsenals/factories.
