I have just obtained a American made .300 Weatherby Mark V. It has a factory synthetic stock, blued action. Everything about the rifle is just fine, except the trigger. It has horrible creep. Is there a drop-in after market model available for less than an arm and a leg?

Judgeg,

Canjar makes a very fine trigger for the Weatherby MK V. However there is usually a long wait to get one. You might want to contact them and see if they have any in stock. They are slow but honest and make very fine triggers.

If you don't want to install an after market trigger, the Weatherby trigger can be tuned to a crisp safe 3 pound pull by a competant gunsmith. Make sure he is experienced with Weatherby triggers as they have to be detail stripped, honed and lubed correctly.

Good luck and good hunting.

JudgeG,

Unless the latest Weatherbys have changed then as follows:

There is a screw down inside the rear of the receiver that adjusts sear engagement. Screw it in too far and the rifle will not cock and screw it out too far and you will have lots of creep.

There is also a screw up trhough the trigger guard to adjust weight of pull. However this spring is very heavy except for much earlier Wbys and you will be limited.

If you want a much lighter pull then the trigger return spring needs to be replaced with something much lighter. The trigger assembly is held on with a big screw just near the sear engagement screw. This can be extremely tight and you would probably be better off getting a gunsmith to remove it.

With a lighter spring and careful adhustment of the sear engagement screw, Wbys will frequently give a pull as light as 1 pound and with reliability.

But again, the very latest Wbys maybe different.
