Sevens, not really sure how to answer your question as it's asked but I'll throw these thoughts out: The M70 plastic stock weighs 32 oz's. A finished Bansner (High Tech) stock will come in at approx 26 oz's... 6 oz's is all you can expect to lose. A Brown Precision "Pounder" stock will finish up at 22 oz's (but cost's a LOT). You can go with Talley lightweight rings and shave a couple of ounce that way too (a low pair for the M70 weigh 1.9 oz's). Farily radical barrel fluting will shave another 3-6 oz's... Use a small scope... my favorite 2x7 VXII Leupold weigh's 10.2 oz's. Use an Unce Mikes "Mountain Sling"... very nice and weigh's only 3.4 oz's. Cut the barrel from 26" to 23" and drop 2.5 oz's. M70's are not light and it's only by paying attention to all the little details that you'll remove any real weight... a stock alone will not get you much.

Thanks Brad. I'm tending to get that impression. What about using the lone wolf summit stock? It says it weighs only a pound. That would put me at, if winchesters quoted weights are correct, 6.5 pounds. I could put on a scope and what ever else and be somewhere around 8 pounds. Maybe not a true sheep rifle, but sure would beat a 9-10 pound rifle. Sevens

Sevens, I was editing my post while you were writing your response... hope what I added helps. Lone Wolf stocks... well, do a "search" over the past few years and you'll get a lot of negative information about them. I've had a lot of stainless M70's... the USRAC literature is waaaay off regarding weight. A typical stainless M70 300 WM will come in (bare weight) at around 7lbs 10 oz's. And, on average, will go over 9 lbs "all-up".

Tom illustrates my point well... with sling and three rounds he's over nine pounds "all up" weight... very typical of an M70 with a magnum contour. The last Borden I had with molded in color went 31 oz's. A painted Borden will go a coupe of ounces less at 28-29 oz's.
