Am going to buy a new rifle, and need your help because of my irresolution.
My criterias for the rifle are:

1. 26" barrel
2. 308 Winchester
3. Low locktime.
4. Light, no more than 8 pounds.
5 Short action
6. Wood stock, but also synthetic if it`s a good one.
7. Blued or stainless action, it doesn`t matter.
8. Accuracy under 1,5"
9 Stock that fits me well. I likes Remington BDL, Brno stocks and Weatherby UL stocks)8, while Sako is too thick . I`m 6` tall.
10. Be able to mount scope (very) low.
11. Best value.
12. Have to love it

I am mostly hunting for medium game size in normal conditions. After I get my gun, I will change to a timney trigger, new titanium firing pin, spring, bed the action and get the barrel free floating.

Got it? Make my dreamrifle! Much depends on you.

You are probably going to have to have one built as 308's with 26" barrels are rare as factory rifles.I would start with a trued and lapped stainless 700 action ,a good match grade barrel, pillar bedded into a mcmillan stock. The best part is that you can choose your length of pull, barrel contour and stock design to suit yourself so it will be exactly what you want.

Rigfer,

Stublejumper makes some good points and if you want to go the custom route I agree with him, build what you want.In a factory trimmed rifle wood stock and short action.

I would look seriously at the Winchester WSM Classic Laminated - in 270, 7mm, and 300 WSM. Sure you will give up 2" of barrel, but the WSM line will provide better performance over a 308 Win. The Remington and Ruger model rifles are available with 22" barrels.

You can dress it up with a trigger job, pillar bed, float the barrel, install a compact 3x9 low mounted scope and have a semi custom rifle.

I think it will meet or exceed you expectations.

Just my .02 worth

I own a rifle thats almost exactly what you want.

It's a Steyr SBS Tactical Heavy Barrel .308

1 Barrel is 25.6"
2 .308
3 Very sweet two stage trigger
4 8 lbs without scope
5 short action
6 good synthetic
7 matte blue
8 way under 1 moa
9 Adjustable length of pull with factory butt spacers ( I'm 6'4" 275 lbs)
10 I have a 44mm nikon on medium rings
11 $800
12 I love mine

And you wont need to spend any time or money messing with aftermarket parts. This thing will shoot groups right out of the box that will amaze your friends and scare the hell out of your enemies.

The hard part is finding one
