I was shooting my 458 Lott today. After about 10 or 12 shots, I noticed a small chunk had blown off behind the Tang, and there's a very small crack there. Guess I didn't relieve the area around the Tang enough. Accuracy offhand was about 2" from 40 yards.

JD,
tear it down, and inspect the area RIGHT being the recoil lug and in front of the mag... it may be broken and moved back...

this is BAD...

if not, it may just be, but I haven't seen it, that it pushed back.

did you put a recoil lug on the barrel?

Glue it. It will work and the crack will nearly disappear.
I had to put a crossbolt and fully bed my 416 due to a crack. I also relieved the tang about a 1/4 inch. more.
Check the search for a variety of glueing repairs.
Good luck
Frank

You don't need 1/4 inch of clearance behind the tang.... 1/16 is plenty. The problem was the recoil lug set back. Reinforce the bedding, install a crossbolt(or 2) and bed the rifle correctly. It will be fine. The crack can be quite easily repaired and won't be noticable.

Jeffe: I didn't put a recoil lug on the barrel; I probably should have. The recoil lug did not set back; it has a crossbolt in that area, and there's one behind the magazine box as well. Just to be on the safe side, I put a 1/4" steel rod into the wrist when I fixed it. Before glueing it, I spread everything out a bit to get epoxy into the crack. There was an identical crack on the bottom part of the wrist that also had to be filled. I'm going to let everything cure for a few days, and I'll report back if it worked. This isn't the first the first time I've broken a stock, but this is the first time I've built anything heavier than 375 H&H.
