I'll take the SEWAG that you'll loose 100 fps. Velocity loss seems to vary from 30-50 fps/inch depending on case dimensions and barrel length.

You may loose about 100fps. Why not just buy a new case?

The ultra mag needs 26 inches of barrel, otherwise it's just a .300 winnie.

Mike

My own testing with a .308win cut from 21" to 18" showed a 84fps loss

I shortened my .375 h&h AI from 26" to 22" and lost 63 fps [Big Grin]

Good luck!!

Velocity loss is hardly the issue. The more significant question is how much hearing loss will you suffer with a shortened barrel and a "cherry bomb" muffler installed on it.

Please consider the fact that the 300 Ultramag needs more than a 26 inch barrel for optimum performance. With a 28-30 inch tube this thing can bark with the big dogs. Cutting the barrel back to 24 inches will probably drop velocities to 300 wby/top 300 win mag levels. A brake is a good idea IMHO and George Vias makes a good one. I've got a fair amount of experience with this cartridge and have used it in Africa on two trips out to 350 yrds. It is a potent package!-Rob
