Local gun shop got in a Persian mauser. I've identified it as a VZ-24 rifle made by Brno and sold to Persia (Iran). The action is quite smooth and they want $100 for it. Other than the crylic writing on the side of the receiver, it looks and feels like a very nice action suitable for a future project.

Is it worth it?

Any Large Ring Mauser that isn't pitted is worth a $100 bucks to me with the possible exception of the war years..The only Persian I've seen looked unissued...I don't recall the maker..

That is true, but they exported some VZ 24's to Persia and put the Cyrillic writing on them. Just like Spanish (and other languages) show up on export FN and German made military rifles.

This particular rifle is Czech made, at least according to the two Mauser reference books in the gun shop.

Yugoslavian 98's (M48, etc..) have a form of Cyrillic on them. The rifles that Brno made for Persia have Farsi written on them.

Thank You Kurt! I should have expanded my post to include that bit about Farsi but my 2 yr old bumped his head. Gotta have some priorities, lol.

Just to be clear, Cyrllic is like the Russian letters we used to see in all the 80's movies. Farsi is more akin to arabic letters. The Persians have a really nice lion crest on them.

cyril-lic is an artifical character set, devised by "st. cyril" to create a codifed written language for the slavs. Only the character set is artifical, the language is natural, NOT a synthetic like esparanto

farsi and arabic would like simular to those that dont have a knowledge base (i DO NOT) between the two.. but, as I understand it, the relationship is actualyl further than the english (american) alphabit vs cryillic

the various export mausers were MADE TO SPEC of the receiving company... from a minimum standard... just like OEM electronics coming out of japanese owned plants around the world
