I am not sure what action this is.

Also, the owner is thinking of using it to build a 308, and wants me involved. I think he should look for another donor action.

What do you guys think.

Thanks for the information.

Jim

As far as building a .308 (or anything else) on it, I don't think so.

Craigster, I'm curious as to why you wouldn't build anything on it? I agree a.308 might be too much. It appears to me to be a 95 action. As such, if it was sound, I'd have no issues building a .257, 6.5x55. 7x57, a .300 savage, 9x57 or even 9.3x57. All relatively low pressure rounds.

Pdnntr. Does it have the square corner/flat bottom bolt face?

I only looked at the bolt face briefly to check the fit of a 308 case, and I can't recall anything out of the ordinary. As I recall, the bolt and bolt face were round. No square corners.

Well the pics of the crest and the numbers (at sunblest) do match those on the action.

I didn't measure but it seemed to me the lugs were not as "long" as those on a typical mauser. Is this part of the problem?

This is not my action so feel free to tell me its problems.

Jim

The only reason I wouldn't build on it is because it looks a bit rough to me. If a guy wanted to go to the time and trouble to clean it up, any of the rounds you mentioned would work fine. As an old engineer friend of mine liked to say, "It might be fine as far as form, fit, and function goes, but it looks like shit". Wink

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it does look a little rough but noting unsafe and the receiver looks clean. Hard to tell from the pics whether that's pitting or dirt on the bolt stop & floorplate.

Thanks guys,

Rem721, those are pits.

I am not too keen on this action at all. The firing pin is protruding a little over .010, it is a COC, it needs a lot of work and I just can't get over the feeling I would be polishing a turd.

I am going to try to talk the guy into another choice of actions.

Jim

Why not NDI it and see what kind of shape it's in. If it's solid build something soft out of it.

I agree and if it was mine I would likely do something with it.

The gent that owns it is already talking about using a different action and that suits me just fine.

Those are not terribly common, if he can find the rest of the parts (or even sell what he is) he may be able to raise enough to get into a much nicer 98 pattern. This is the earlier 93/95/96 small ring pattern, despite the date / model designation on it.
