More information on the same problem...i'm having trouble reassembling my shotgun, the barrel won't locate smoothly, a closer inspection revealed the the barrel is coming up hard on the rear section of the fore-end support assembly, I lock the action back, slide the barrel in, the barrel goes past the "wings" on the fore-end support assembly but strikes hard on the rear section, thats the piece that is half round and sits on top of the magazine tube,I have broken this part before and am now wondering whether i've done it by being too heavy handed, did Remington have different assemblies over the years? any advice would be appreciated.

Get a Beretta.

I had a rem 1100 way back. Lots of o-rings and things to go wrong. The Beretta has very few moving parts, and you don't have to clean the gas mechanism.

I've had Rem 1100s in the shop that were hard to assemble as you described and in two differant cases it was caused by the front of the magazine tube being damaged and out of round. Take a set of dial calipers and carefully measure the front of the magazine tube to determine if it is round or oval from being damaged. Also take a straight edge and check to see if the mag tube has been bent.

If the magazine tube checks out OK take a close look at the ring attached to the barrel and check for damage. Make sure the gas rings and mag tube are free of carbon and the barrel seal (O ring) is good. Finally make sure the gas rings and barrel seal are assembled in the proper sequence.

Good Luck
