Is there an idiot-proof (i.e. Bill-proof) stain that will give some 19th-century red to a black walnut stock for a rolling block project? I did this a few years ago with some Homer Dangler stain I had bought years back from Klein and it wanted to streak and misbehave and I was afraid I had ruined the wood. It eventually came around though, and I finished with several thin coats of hand-rubbed Tru-oil. I'd like to skip the drama with this next rolling block project. Advice? Of course; get some Laurel Mountain stain; they make many shades and you can mix them. I use Walnut mixed with Lancaster Maple which has red in it. Depends on how dark you need it. You can't mess it up.

Mix up some alkanet oil. You can apply as much as you want to reach the desired color. Don't think you can mess it up and easy to do.

I second the use of Laurel Mountain stains. They are all I will use. Phil
