I have two part question, I have a M70 Westerner in 264 Win. Mag. I took it out to do a thorough cleaning and maintenance on it. I took it out of the stock and was oiling the action. The barrel is a Winchester Proof 26" stainless steel. I know this because I reblued the entire rifle, as it was in rough condition when I bought it. Anyway, as I was oiling the rifle I noticed on the underside of the recoil lug a set of numbers, .458. Keep in mind, the rifle does have a Winchester barrel. What does that .458 refer to, does it refer to the 458 Win Mag. I know this same rifle did come in 458 Win Mag. Did Winchester stamp the caliber that the rifle is in on the bottom of the recoil lug?

My next question is this, how do I adjust the trigger?

Thanks

Here is a site for the trigger. http://snipercountry.com/Articles/AdjustingWinTrigger.htm

Once you take the stock off and look at it you will see the common sense of that trigger. I think it's the best one by far for hunting rifles. I usually cut or replace the spring to lighten it.

I have a .264 Westerner but I don't feel like taking the stock off. It's all sighted in and all.

I suspect you have a re-barreled 458 and thats not a problem if it feeds and they do as a rule.

As to adjusting the trigger, most need to be honed, which is no big job, but you better know what your doing...I think you would be way ahead to have a "good" gunsmith work the trigger over, About $25 ot $50.

Big 17, I think I read in the "Rifleman's Rifle", that Winchester stamped .458 on most of the magnum actions, when they were being made. Not to denote the caliber, but to designate the fact that they were magnum actions.

Big17: Not to confuse the issue, but all the short magnum actions were stamped ".458". The .375H&H and the .300H&H were not stamped, as they were on the long action and the only two calibres relegated to that particular action. Re: "The Rifleman's Rifle" by Roger Rule. JLS
