TITANIUM NITRIDE COATING

could any body enlighten me on this process as far as getting an action treated with this process

It is a vacuum deposition coating process. I think you can get Rockwell hardness up to about 70. It provides extremely good wear resistance. If you ever use a titanium nitride coated drill bit on steel for an extended amount of drilling, you will see what I am talking about.

Do a google search for "Brycoat" or "titanium nitride coating". I have wondered if a rifle bore coated in the stuff would be worth having and also, whether it could re-chambered with a carbide reamer [I am sure HSS would not cut it]. I believe SigArms nitrides the bores of the Sauer 202 and Blaser line of rifles.

One problem is the color. I am sure you know but it is a yellow gold color. You would probably get the same effect by doing the bolt only (as far as the action goes). It would be interesteing to see what that would do for the bore though!

I've considered this as well.....as I understand it's done at somewhat high temps.....like 800 Deg F.....

That bothers me and won't subject an action to that kind of heat as it draws the temper in the steel.

Research this well before proceeding.

I have no first hand experience with the heat thing....only what I've been told and this could be pure BS.

Mostly it about 40 millionths thick coat and extremely hard.

I'd do it if it wasn't for the drawing issue.

Have dealt with in the Tool and Die industry (Automotive). The temps aren't that high, but 500degrees is about normal with typical D2 tool steel. It is a great coating for wear resistence and lubricity(?). I have no experience when it comes to firearms

Most of the carbide tooling I've seen with this coating is a bit rougher in finish than what I would want in the bore of a rifle. I'm sure it could be polished in some way though. There are several of these types of coatings in use in the cutting tool industry. A couple(TAlN?) are very dark colored and might be more pleasing to the eye than TiN. Some are more heat and abrasion resistant than others. I don't have any idea of the temps used in the process though.

my gun maker implements this process on his titanium M 98 to stop galling...he says after the treatment there is no galling and the actions are REALLY SLICK
PC ..i spoke with brian harrie from new zealand who makes the HARRIE actions and he says its avaliable in australia in a black colour version i will get more info off him when i speak with him..he says in New Zealand its not avaiable as yet in black ...

There are 2 primary application methiods. physical and chemicial. Chemicial takes place at about 1000deg C, so we won't consider that one (BTW, this is the one that A) tends to be a little rough and B) would coat the bore).
Physical uses a radiant pre-heat, under high vacuum, before bombarding the coating onto the part(s). Holes can be coated, to a depth of about 1.5 times the diameter.

Nathan Meckel and his Molecular Metallurgy company are local here. He has donated some coating applications to our SCI fund-raiser, but I don't have any direct experience with TiN coatings outside of tools.

M98:

How does a fellow get ahold of Brian Harre. I've been trying to find him for almost two years---since seeing his incredble actions at the Reno Safari Club show in 2004. Do you have an e-mail addy or phone number for him? Is he still making those actions?
