Scope base installation

Gents,
I appreciate your advice on a necessary revision that might help me.I finally have in hand my new 300 RUM rifle on a Nesika Bay action. While I am waiting for better REM brass( my first batch of 100 cracked because of brass manufact fault),I am trying to install my Leupold scope on it (4.5-14,50mm)It turns out that this is impossible with Talley bases,as the breach in the action is too long for the short scope.Talley does not make bases that overhang into the breach by much,to narrow the distance.
I have one possible alteration:Nesika predrilled the for scope bases.I think I can set the front pair of holes back and have new holes drilled.

The question I have is ,who can do proper scope base drilling into the action?Meaning any gunsmith who says he can,or should I determine proper machinery for accurate alignement with the barrel? The barrel is free floated and newly bedded,Do I have to remove the rifle from its stock to drill these holes accurately?

My thoughts being that if the holes are not precisely aligned with the action profile and the barrel, the shaped Talley bases will not properly fit and/or the scope axis will not be parallel to the barrel.dont know whether scope zeroing would eliminate all faults from non parallel bases.
thanks for advice

Don't re-drill the action!!!! Have new bases made. This is the cheapest and most practical. Give me a call.

sheephunter,

I would agree 100% with Jim.

You don't want extra holes drilled in that nice Nesika Bay action where they should not be.

With a 50mm objective bell, the scope will be mounted fairly high anyway. What not use a set of quality "offset" mounts. I think Leupold makes some.

Jim Kobe did custom bases on this G33/40. It had Weaver bases installed previously and I didn't want to redrill and tap. Nor did I want the rear stripper clip hump of the receiver ground off. He did a fine job and I know making that custom rear base to fit must have been a real pain in the arse. Heres that rifle. A very fine job indeed!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.Happy I dont have to redrill the action.I will try to obtain a custom Talley base for the front, that should accomodate the scope.
Beautiful rifle Alvin,I would be afraid taking that one on the mountain [Smile]

Sheephunter,

Take a look at the Zeiss Conquest scopes. They seem to have a longer tube than the Leupolds. May solve your problem.

I drilled and tapped some extra hole in a '38 Turk action, now the guys refer to it as my Swiss cheeze action. They can't even see the holes through the one piece mount, they just know the holes are there.
