I have a sporterized, I assume, military BRNO VZ24 action, in a very nice sporter walnut stock. I would like to rebarrel this rifle to 30.06 from it's current 8x57 mm. Will I run into any problems with the magazine being too short for the 30.06 cartridge. Jim

I rebarreled one in .300 Win.Mag. and had to saw the mag well in the front corners down for approx 1/2" and bend it forward about 1/8". I also took a little off the ramp.It holds two in the mag and one in the chamber. Works good.

I think you will be ok with that -- I have a 270 in an unmodified Argentine '98, without problem. If it is tight, you should probably attack the back of the mag well with a flat file first. File back / thin out until you start to get into the floorplate latch recess. I think the problem with belted mags is not necessarily length, but the diameter of the casehead and shoulder -- they don't stagger out enough to get more than 2 - 3 in the mag. Good luck,

arkypete: Your mag well on the CZ24 should measure about 3.315" or somewhere there abouts. The SAMMI spec for 30-06 is 3.340" COL. You will be a little short. Todd Getzen is correct, you can file about .060" from the rear mag well wall. Another .015" can be taken from the front mag wall without feed ramp problems. You can make a dummy round for a gauge @ 3.385" COL or so and check everything for square. After you have done this a very small amount of material will have to be removed from the front surface of the bolt stop to allow the bolt to come back far enough to "pick up" the round from the magazine. I would be interested in your "take off" barrel, what are you going to do with it? ------------------ [This message has been edited by wildcat junkie (edited 01-14-2002).]

If no more than .015" is taken from the front wall, is may not be necessary to rework the feed ramps. ------------------

wildcat junkie The barrel is 18.5 inches long. Me thinks the previous owner trimmed it a bit. When I get the job done, you are most welcome to the barrel. Jim

arkypete: Oops sorry, I'm looking for barrels with the original countors. Thanks anyway. ------------------

It's a simple matter to to open the 24 up to 30-06 or for that matter 375 H&H..and rebarrel one....open them up in the rear. ------------------
