I'm looking over this piece of .300RUM brass I was given by someone who doesn't handload, and I made the even bigger mistake of talking to my friend (the original Wild Bill who was on this sight until last year). Now I'm beginning to get the hankerings for an 8mmRUM.
Here's the deal, we load those wonderful 220 grainers in this thing, nice and hot to really push their potential. the rifle would of course be a total custom job, thus the evil part, since it would be out right murder on my finances. But here's what I was thinking of anyway:
Remington 700 action
Jewell Trigger
Heavy bench rest stock
Possibly a Harris bi-pod, although I haven't worked that out yet
heavy target Hart barrel
scope mounts and base
long range 6.5-42 variable leupold to top it all off
yup, a beanfield rifle. sight it in for 250-350 yds. Practicality in this endevor for me is non-existant, but such things have never stopped me before and I doubt ever will.
First question that I'd like to bat out of the air before it get asked is why not just a 300 or 338 RUM? Don't want them. this project is designed solely for 8mm 220 grain bullets to be shot at long range, and ONLY at long range.
The gun assumes alot, the biggest, and possibly most fatal is that the shots will be a target of some kind at extreme range.
That's understood at this end, in fact i've built it that way for that purpose. If I want a close quarters gun there are plenty of 30/30 lever guns floating around.
Ok then, give me your opinions.

Just remember to post pictures when you got it done. I suspect you've already started on it. Enjoy!
Could not help noticing your handle---or is it your actual name? Curtis Lemay was a fairly well known air force general. I think he may have been Chief of Staff at one point. He died in about 1990 if I recall. Is Curtis Lemay your actual name, are you related to the real general or is there some reason relative to the general or his role in military history that you have adopted his name as your handle? Nothing wrong with doing so at all, just curious.

Jordan

Go for it my friend!
There is absolutely nothing more satisfying than hunting with a rifle you have built yourself, with ammo you loaded yourself.

Curtis,
I like your idea - 8mm is super. But I have a boring question: Why dont you make a 8x68S? That cartridges is equal to .300 Wby or in fact outperforms it with some fps.
But if your project is to make and try something quite new: go for you 8mm RUM - and come back and tell us about your experiences!
What do expect your gun to perform?
Best regards,
Fritz
I was planning a totally separate project for the 8x68 round. As for the RUM idea, the goal is to pick up where the 8mm Rem Mag left off. (by the way 8mm rem mag is yet another project idea). Keep in mind the 220 grainers really hit their potential a RUM velocities, so I was simply going to exploit that for my own evil purposes >meniacle laughter<. Good question though.

I think that is a dandy of a project, and I agree with the rest..."Go for it!". I actually can't believe that I hadn't considered it yet myself.
I am a really big fan of the 8mm Rem Mag. My father has used one for about 25years now, and it is a fantastic cartridge. In his factory Rem 700 he gets dime sized groups with the 220 grain Hornady's, and it has been hell on moose. This 8mm RUM would just me more of a good thing!
So, is your friend the same Wild Bill that posted here before we changed formats?

I love the 8x57. Most all the available bullets are made for it at the lower velocity..I really like the 225 gr. Woodleigh...
I suppose your caliber would work with Noslers or monolithics...

I do have horrible news though, I was talkning to Wild Bill again (the original) and he gave another idea, it seems the two of us are on one hell of an 8mm kick this week...I'll post it all tomorrow sometime under evil thought$ continued
