Barreling an Enfield
Sirs,
Who has the best deal on a threaded/chambered barrel for an M1917? I am looking at having a new action to play with soon and I'm thinking I'd like to build a sho' nuff blaster out of this one. I know that many of you own and shoot sporterized Enfields; who's barrel does yours wear? I looked on Lothar Walther's website last night for a threaded/prechambered barrel but they look like M98 specialists. I guess I could give Woody a call and ask him though.
Also, what do you guys do in terms of the safety, bottom metal, and stock?
Thanks all!
Best deal ($ wise) would probably be E. R. Shaw. They did 2 Mauser 98's and one P14 for me before I started doing them myself. The gunsmithing was very good and the barrel quality is plenty good enough for "blasting". In fact my E.R. Shaw VZ24/338-06 is one of my most accurate rifles. Some folks don't like Shaw (for some reason) but I've been very satisfied with their work.

barrel - any maker that you like
this one is a pacnor, have used most others, next 500 AR will be a bauska, have used AB, shaw, and shilen
safety - polish and leave the original
trigger - timney has "three", 5 shot, 6 shot, and "A2", each a bit longer than the preveious
bottom metal - how much do you want to spend?
for a fun rifle (hint, not spend 1/2 of the build on bottommetal) i usually just used a reworked mil or make a box very close to that
it IS possible to use a mauser bottom, if you are willing to do a little welding, filling, drilling, etc.. and it WILL require a custom stock, as the mauser metal is far narrower (is that a word?) than the hole in the stock from the military or a standard custom stock
stock? well, if you want cheap, boyds jrs stocks, from boyds (not midway) .... otherwise, you can have one turned on you piece of wood from 100-200 bucks, if you want to do the inletting and install..

jeffeossothanks max, it's the last 500 jeffe i did, and mine.. i took about a POUND off a gag pattern stock for it. I since went to 3/8 ebony caps, rather than the 1/2 "blobs" i had used before
quartersawn english, pacnor barrel, A2 trigger, modified box, cut back action.. well, just a bunch of fun, but the feeding was a nightmare. a nightmare I hope to avoid in the future with the 500 AR
