Anyone have a good source for ebony tip material? I know Brownells has it but looking for a touch less that their price.

Second I've always used acetone then epoxy to attach. Any of the new glues work better?

As usual just my $.02

Try Woodcraft, they have some 2x2x12 for 35 bucks. Thats twice as much cost for 4 times the product at Brownells.

Also try The Old Master Crafters in Wisconsin, I think it is.

I would call Dressels and see what they have. You'll pay a little more but you'll know what you have.

IMO, looking for a deal on ebony is usually a bad deal. If it's cheap a lot of times it's not fully cured. From personal experience I can tell you it's a major piss off to install and shape a nice looking ebony tip only to have it swell on you when you apply finish because it wasn't cured all the way. Mad It looks nice from a few feet back but when you run your finger down the stock you will always feel that ever so slight ridge where the two woods meet.

A lot of that wood you get from places like Rockler or woodcraft is not dry enough. usually it is meant for turning pens and such. A freind used some on a stock remodel he did and after attaching and shaping he applied finish. A couple of weeks later it had shrunk enough to easily see and feel, worse yet, it developed cracks.

I have to agree with Terry.

Not to hijack this post but in light of all of the issues with ebony, is there someplace that sells faux ebony, dyed birch or such?

FWIW, being the wood nut that I am, I just bought several pieces of mun ebony and one piece of Burmese blackwood from this company. Looked good, delivered with no problems BUT all were heavily waxed which tells me they are likely too wet to use immediately. Somewhere I've got an expensive moisture meter which I rarely use, if I locate it, I'll stick them and see what their moisture content is.

There is some discussion about how well the process works with ebony but, considering the time and effort in putting a more ornate tip on a stock, I'd consult with Mike at http://www.stabilizedwood.com/info.shtml and see what he thought. No, it isn't cheap, but it solves the warp/shrink problem with many woods used on expensive knife handles, etc.

You're right in that most of the ebony at woodworking stores is relatively green. That's because their customers demand it. Also, my local Woodcraft carries a lot of ebony, but it is generally striped or figured, and not too good for stocks. I have found sources on eBay that are really well priced and have good ebony. Just order two or three pieces 2x2x12 and put them on the shelf. They will be ready to use in a year, and you will have an ongoing supply.

Off the subject a bit, but Gibson (guitars) was "raided" by federales claiming Gibson could not document where and how the ebony was obtained.

I hear that there was quite a quantity and last I heard they have not gotten it back.

What next...confiscate your rifle?

I got a good deal on some ebony at a Rockler. Nothing wrong with waiting before you use it.

I too, have purchased ebony from the ebay seller mentioned above. Fast delivery, and the wood was so black I almost took it for synthetic material.

I had heard the last raid was over rosewood, but they (Gibson) have been rung up for ebony in the past. This isn't the first time that they have been raided over wood.

One difference might be that Martin is actually a big time wood importer and distributor. They got into the business to insure the quality of their own supply, but their wood business has grown hugely. They may have better control over their supplies than Gibson.
