In another thread, there was debate over who supplied the various rifle makers with their actions IE Mauser is building on XYZ brand, Rigby is sourcing actions from "insert name here", and so on. Brand X is made from better steel than brand Y... In looking at it, I didn't find a complete list of who all makes a "modern" Mauser action and who uses what for their builds/why. I thought it might make an interesting topic and I'm sure there are those here who know far more about this than I do, so I won't speculate. Basic list of companies/individuals that make modern Mauser actions: FZH Mauser? Dumoulin? Mayfair Engineering Granite Mountain Arms Satterlee Prechtl H & W Heym So, who is supplying actions to whom and are any clearly superior in terms of metallurgy or similar?

I only use vintage Mauser actions made by various makers; no modern stuff.

I used most of these except Heym and Dumuloin. I don't know of any that won't tell you the material they use. No concern for safety, and reliability. Of course, a Bubba can screw anything up.

A question for those who have handled these modern magnum Mauser actions. In actual Measurements, who makes the closest copy of an original magnum action ? Just curious because most seem very chunky in pictures.

Those dumoulin "mausers" that sarco has are a crapshoot and very underwhelming......... .

Duane- Thank you for chiming in. Your experience is appreciated as you have more first hand knowledge than most. Dr. Google has some opinions that are often worth what they charge...so it's good to get info from a reliable source. Generally, it seems strange that companies like GMA are very clear about the steel they use, it's hardness, and similar...while some makers simply list "carbon steel". Dumoulin reportedly used basic A2 tool steel for the ones on Sarco...hardly something to get excited about, but likely adequate with proper heat treat. In a prior thread on here, a smith mentioned that some of the Euro manufactured actions were simple carbon steel with a case hardened shell...which, in their view, was not worth the $$$ when you could have a GMA or similar from better steel that didn't rely on case hardening and was less likely to suffer ill effects of high pressure rounds. Do you have any thoughts on that view? Is a simple carbon steel, case hardened, inferior to a higher quality steel that is less sensitive to those issues? Thanks!

To add to this...who is the source/import POC for the actions? It's great to know the maker...but often finding one is a challenge.

I think Reimer Johannsen makes their own actions as well. On Mauser, I believe the used to buy the Prechtl actions, but when Blaser bought Rigby (Balser already owned Mauser) they started producing their own actions internally for Mauser and Rigby branded rifles. Though I could always be wrong. Be interested in who the other London gunmakers use for their Mauser actions - especially H&H. Doubtful, that they used A2.... most likely some Sarco fiction.

Quite possible, you are correct. Dr. Google says so...there are some reviews of the action on various sites and a report advised that Sarco said A2. Who knows... I'm not a metallurgist either way, so it's all greek to me. Actual metallurgist opined that A2 wasn't so great anyway. In this article, the author goes over GMA and they discuss their steel, why they used it and so on. Interesting. I wish other makers did the same. http://custommausersbygma.blog...ser-rifle-built.html

I am a metallurgist .A2 is a tool steel and nor appropriate for a rifle except perhaps some small parts the need wear resistance more than toughness. Mauser actions have traditionally been made with carburized carbon steel . A better choice is carburized 8620. Through hardened type is standard with 4140. Remember that a hardness of HRc 40-45 will give you good strength and good toughness .Higher hardness will make it too brittle for that application .

Building your own Sniper, Target, or Varmint rifle has never been so enticing! SARCO worked for over a year to bring you this colossal opportunity to own a brand new, complete Dumoulin Mauser action at the best price on the world market!!!!! Lets get to the objective specs, on what this means for you: •RECEIVER: This is an A-2 steel, forged / heat treated body which has been checked and gauged after each machining operation ensuring precision with strict tolerances and ultimately, superb mating with attached parts and adherence to Engineer drawings. •BOLT: A-2 Steel, one piece bolt ,handle & knob with checkered flat on underside. The extractor is the traditional proven, claw type extractor. Bolt Head diameter is set for the .30-06 family of cartridges. (A2 Chromium/molybdenum/vanadium is tool steel). •RECEIVER SPECIAL FEATURES: Flats with threaded holes and dovetails, permit the use of a variety of rings and bases. This feature eliminates the need for screwed on bases. Each flat is predrilled and threaded for standard 6-48 screws in 2 places. Flat tops are parallel and at the same level. These Actions have been engineered from original FN Belgian blue prints. •TRIGGER MECHANISM: The trigger is fully adjustable for sear engagement, over travel, and creep. The trigger body is made of steel. •TRIGGER GUARD: This trigger guard is fully machined from a steel forging and has a hinged FN/ Ruger style floorplate and latch. Believe it or not, I priced a similar trigger guard at the Shotshow from a German supplier and they wanted $800 for the guard. The Action capacity is 5 rds. of .30-06 length ammo. •FINISH: These Actions and Guards are blued. Some have bright bolts. •RECEIVER THREADS: Threads are standard 1.10 x 12 TPI. •BOLT-SPECIAL FEATURES: Strength of the forged bolt exceeds that of bolts in normal production. The specially designed bolt sleeve is an FN type and incorporates a Winchester style side swing 3 position blocking safety. This type of safety allows the use of a single or double set trigger in complete safety and preventing a discharge. Currently a similar bolt sleeve sells for $150.00 separately. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Leaving the Dumoulin actions aside, I'm still curious about my original question. Those who have handled these modern "Magnum" Mauser actions. In actual Measurements, who makes the closest copy of an original magnum action ?

From their claims, I believe Prechtl does. I have not handled any of them, but 5 years ago or so when I was looking to buy a Mauser Magnum action, Prechtl is who I contacted and got a quote for an action and 400 H&H barrel. PRECHTL M98 MAGNUM ACTION The Prechtl magnum action is also manufactured according to the original blueprints from Paul Mauser, however, several technical details have also been altered in order to suit the modern high power calibers. For example the feeding opening for the cartridges was enlarged for additional 1,5mm in order to obtain more stability; the diameter of the firing pin was reduced from 2mm to 1,7mm in order to withstand the high pressures of the modern magnum calibers; the extractor was lengthened for 8mm in order to ensure more flexibility and to enable to handle cartridges like the .460 Weatherby; the extraction opening was lengthened for 8mm in order to enable even the largest cartridges to be loaded; the double square bridges bridges heightened for 2mm in order to withstand more pressure. All parts are made of solid material. A total of 15kg of steel is cut and the weight of the finished action is 1,35kg. The manufacturing process requires approximately 92 hours.
