I just picked up a new octagon to round barrel brand new never been chambered in 338 cal for $100. Still have to slug it to be sure. The shank is 1.125 inch. Looks like ill build a 338 winmag or ? from it.
What action that isnt going to run a fortune would work? I am still learning so I dont like to learn on high $ parts. I had a $85 enfield but the shank isnt big enought. Any ideas?

for a low buck action try the Zastava (mausers)

I'm not a fan of Chas Daly at all but the zastava might work for you in magnum as well as .30-06 length and bolt face.
If you buy one you use it as is and fix it yourself if it needs fixing...

As an educational action it's ok.....and they work if you do your thing.

Such a barrel calls for a classic action, so I'd say mauser 98. I'd even consider a 338-06 even though I'm not a fan of that chambering.

Thats too bad, that would have been a fine platform for a WM.

Lots of folks moving toward the CD actions, which is OK. Ruger has been making investment cast actions around some very intense cartridges for a long time now. That just means more millsurp actions left for me.

One often overlooked avenue for someone trying to build a rifle on the cheap is to simply buy a good used Mauser that has been previously altered. They can be easily found and sometimes they can be bought at a considerable savings. Probably even moreso since the CD actions have come out. That is how I did my 257 AI.
