I'm not sure this is unique, and maybe not even cool by some standards but I sure like it. It was done by Doug Mann for me.

Many apologies for the photo, I just got the camera and I'm learning to use it. The photo is huge (2 megs) so I'll just post a link.

This isn't really checkering, but it might give some ideas to those who are wondering what to do with a Savage Model 99.

Michael,
any idea about what sort of wood that might be?

Pretty cool whatever it is.

for close up pics of EXCELLENT checkering, I heartly suggest SDH's book "Custom Rifles in Black and White." Steve's photography in that book is incredible. He has some excellent shots of checkering that is as good as it gets. The book is first class all the way around. I only wish I could take pictures and checker like that!

In particular, there is a M52 stocked by Tucker with as close to perfect checkering as can be found on this planet

Brent,

It’s European thin shell walnut, you may call it what you like, French, Circassian or whatever. This blank was bought by R.G. Owen back around 1922 when a block of Circassian cost $4 he paid $24 for this one. The rifle is a Remington 12C.

The gun belongs to a good freind of mine. I took the action from another rifle and inletted it into the finished Clayton Nelson stock for him. That's why there's the ??? about the barreled action, we don't know who made it.
I've learned a lot from getting to closely examine some really nice rifles that belong to a couple good buddies...................DJ
