I got one of those too. Real low serial number, but don't remember what right now. I was told the barrel was first plated and then blued. My mom bought it for my dads birthday in 1962. 7mm Rem Mag. It's still a tack driver.

The receiver is not SS. Nothing in 700 rem book that says the barrels were outsourced, but it was thought at first the barrel would need to be SS for the throat to last. Also gave an advertising plus. The barreled action was first blued, and then the SS barrel was blackened with some kind of a coating. If you try to do it in the other order the finish on the barrel comes off. [This message has been edited by DuaneinND (edited 01-06-2002).]

Over the years, I have probably seen 4 or 5 of these, all in 7mm Rem Mag. Each of these rifles had small spots or imperfections where the stainless steel is exposed. On my rifle, the action also has that same appearance which made me wonder if it could be SS. I recall reading long ago that in order to blue these, the barrels were electroplated with copper first, then blued. Thanks...LR ------------------

I've refinished 2 of these. The recievers blue like normal c.m. It is my understanding that Remington plated the stainless barrels with an iron powder of some sort. Then blued that. I've always polished the barrels enough to remove the plating, then bead blasted the stainless barrel. Makes a pleasing contrast. About the only alternative for refinishing one in bad shape other than having a special vat with Brownells Oxynate 84 for bluing stainless steel. I've examined a couple of the older SS 7mm Rem Mag barrels with a bore scope and it appears Remington did a nicer job with these barrels. My theory is they were competing with Winchester's 264 Win Mag back then. All of these older 7 Rem Mag rifles I've ran across were very accurate.

I've got one and won't part with it, it's a true tack-driver. Looks like heck but shoots beautifully. If I remember right the year of production on mine was '69

I have not shot my 7 mag yet, but I also have an early model Rem 700 BDL in 280 Rem. (SN#207xxx). This gun is the most accurate 700 that I have !!! I think the early model 700 barrels were button rifled from Douglas. Maybe someone can elaborate more on where these barrels came from. The early 700's have an excellent reputation on being very accurate. Thanks...LR ------------------
