Does the hole machined through a Mauser 98 cocking piece serve any use other then to hold the firing pin? The reason I ask is I am thinking of having the back part of an 03A3 firing pin holder welded to a Mauser cocking piece. Basically making something like the Mexican 1936's cocking piece. I don't know if it would be necessary to incorporate some type of vent hole in the finished piece or not.

That added weight will slow down the Mausers already slow lock time. Not a good thing. Doug Humbarger NRA Life member Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club 72'73. Yankee Station Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

How would that be different that a cocking piece mounted peep sight? As usual just my $.02 Paul K

No different and it's all relative anyway. Take a close look at any Mannlicher-Schoenauer or 1888 Commission or Haenel 1888 conversion, to get an idea of exactly how much (or how little) a heavy striker may (or may not) affect accuracy. Sure, a long lock time is somewhat less accurate. No question about that. Will your groups from the benchrest be slightly larger? Very possibly but not by much. Will you kill fewer deer? IMO not unless you're shooting at VERY long range at a running animal, and your chances aren't good there anyway. Go for it; the hole is only for the firing pin. Not for anything else. And the little slot on the side is for a cartridge case to pull the cocking piece back without opening the bolt; don't need that either.
