Was putting my rifle back together last night, 35 whelen on a 1917 enfield. I had to weld the mag box on it and replace the screws for the scope base. Here is the problem, I got the redfield base back on, single hole in back two in front. But when I went to put the scope on I noticed the the rear ring was chewed up, the screws that clamp it to the base had been tightened down unevenly and out of align it looks like, or just really really hard. so they are tweaked, and don't look to me like something I want to use IF I HAVE A CHOICE. (by the way, no it wasn't me that did it. although it does look like I put the rings on the scope a bit tight) So I went through the cabinet and pulled the rings off a different scope that go on a redfield base, they are contoured differently but I figured just an older model or different? But they don't fit! The front ring that goes in and turns 90 degrees, doesn't fit. I did take all hardware off and put the ring in a vise and turned it and it worked, but started to chew the metal. What gives? are redfield bases and rings matched? was going to go to local shop and see what they had that might work. This irritates me. why shops don't setup rifles for two pieces bases is beyond me and really pisses me off. If your rings and bases are not to old, they should be interchangable. The reason a lot of shops use,or there choice of a single base mounts are that, due to writers in the gun field think a single base mount is stronger. It also saves the shop owner of the outlay of monies sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Two piece bases have one more screw a well for the most part. If the back screw broke or was cracked when installation a single base would be useless, when it broke in the field. A screw to break in a two piece,at least you have another screw holding the base on. Also, depending on the person extractor and ejector,a single base mount can hit the ejection of the shell and kick it back in the action, and this has been problems for some. van | |||
