I have currently have a .243,.270,.308,.30-06,.300 win,.338 mag,7mm rem mag and 7mm stw as well as a .300 savage, .375 win in a lever gun and a 8x56r. With these aleady on hand what would be a good choice in either a standard or wildcat round to augment these? I am trying to come up with a new rifle that I would be able to some of the work involved in building. Thanks for you help in advance coues [ 03-17-2003, 23:34: Message edited by: coues ]

.223 Remington? .416 Taylor? Will this be for hunting, targets, or just fooling around? George

I should of stated that this would be a hunting gun.LOL. I am not much of one for organized type shoots(target, varmit). Plinking, load developement and hunting about sums it up. Not against just getting thumped by recoil for the fun of either. LOL Coues

Hi, Thanks for the help. I have a couple of .22lr in both pistol and rifle's, pretty much lacking in the others of this family I agree. I would really like a true bigbore but they are somewhat out my budget range at the moment. I Dream of 50-140 sharps either c.sharps or shilo with all the bells and whistles but don't have the patience (dang long wait) nor the budget it takes to obtain one. On a side note , It was recommended to me that a rifle in 257 Ackley improved would be a good choice for a light weight rifle for my daughter, but I know nothing about this round. This would be a starter rifle for her either built outright or from my .270 ruger m77(late 70's model). It would mean a new stock and barrel on some work I am told to this. Any thoughts on this round and idea? Or any other options as to a round for her? Thanks Coues

You want to maximize your potential for fun with a dual-purpose rifle----try a bolt-action 450 Marlin. You can shoot factory loads, work up real thumpers of reloads or even load it down far enough so a child could shoot it. Can also be very inexpensive to shoot using cast bullets.

Coues, your caliber selections mirror what mine were. When I was young & unencumbered, I'd buy any rifle I could. Ended up with a fair assortment. Going hunting brought about the dilemma of whether the .270 with the 26" barrel or the one with the 22" barrel would be better given the length of shot and the amount of carrying to be done. Then again, maybe an '06 would be better or the new 7mm mag. Funny thing is that most anything from the .257 Ackley up through the 7mm mags and '06 seemed to do pretty much the same job and served well for most of my hunting. Finally, I started thinning out this middle ground in the caliber spectrum going for dedicated varminters rather than the 'dual purpose' rifle. Picked up a couple on the bigger end of things. I probably still have too many rifles to use since I hunt mostly with one - a short, light .308. Go big or go small - you've got the middle covered IMHO. Ed
