I had a customer bring me in a Savage 29A for minor repairs. He had taken it to a shop to be reblued and when it came back the receiver was a bright orange. Its steel but at first glance looks like anodized aluminum. Apparently it was color case hardened prior to the refinishing.
For those that refinish what happened? Is it reversable?

I think there is an underlying problem cause some springs were missing and it had a broken firing pin that was not taken care of, that is why I received it.

Yeah, if memory serves they do turn a funky color when blued. I don't recall for sure, but I don't think it was case hardening that causes it. I believe it's just some sort of funky, Zimbabwe Death steel. I think if you start the tanks and bring them up to 300 and then cool them back down to 280 with water and then dump in the gun and start shocking the shit out of it they do blue. You may have to run it right up to 310. I would shock it ever ten minutes or so. I quit bluing about 10 years ago and haven't regretted it since. But I did do it for almost 25 years.

When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years!

Maximum operating temperature of bluing salts is 310. Anything above that and you risk die off at the bottom of the tanks which is generally much hotter. Always use two thermometers when bluing.

Well I don't do re-blue so the gun will stay orange. Just replace the broken and missing parts.
