Lengthen a M70?

Can the M70 be lengthened safely/easily, and to how long?
~3.8" is what I'm thinking. And a repeater. Too much to ask?
Also, good idea to open up the threads some (how much?) when truing, for thicker barrel tenon?
Application is long-throat 300-404 Imp, long range FN SPR clone of sorts, for 1k light-gun fun.
30" heavy taper with deeeep flutes, Badger knob, Harris bi-pod, Williams bottom, A5 stock, of course. Can you dig it?

I'd rather not lengthen a Model 70 action, and I've never heard of anyone who has.

For an extra-big/extra-long cartridge, I think it would be cheaper, easier, and safer to go with the Weatherby V action. A number of years ago, I visited Kenny Jarrett at his shop in SC. If I remember right, the biggest wildcat he was chambering for at the time was the .338-378 Kubla Kahn, and for projects of that nature Kenny was using the Mark V action. Plenty of length, strength, and room with that one!

Single shot or magazine?
It will perhaps be less costly to get a correctly sized action from start. Take a look at the target actions. McBros is a nice action.

Dan Lilja or David Tooley could help you in the right direction. Give them a call

If it is for 1K yd targets, there is no need for a long action. I know of a few SA 40X's that shoot 300 win mag. As far as barrel/action threads it shouldn't matter; increase one or decrease the other.

Thanks for the responses guys.
As far as the barrel shank goes, I was thinking the chamber would be stronger with a thicker tenon, and that the action ring could bear losing a few thou. Just a thought.
The COL thing really is silly though. The 3.6" 308-404 already smokes out of a 30" tube; I just can't help envisioning those 220's at the BT/neck junction and reaching waaaaay out there.
Just figured, K98's are lengthened to the rear fairly regularly; maybe the M70 could be similarly.

Are you wanting to lengthen the action or open the ejection port? If it is the latter, yea you can do it and I like the idea.

I'm thinking repeater here.
So, magazine, rear ring, bolt stop, ejector.
For single shot wouldn't be any problem, and now that you mention it, it would be interesting to see how deep you could seat VLD's and SMK's when loaded single-shot into a standard 300RUM chamber....
