I friend of mine just picked up a M48 Yugo Mauser that he want's to convert to a 338 WinMag. He told me he is planning on using the Whitetail Gun Shop Bottom metal/Magazine setup. I had never seen this setup before. Does anyone have any experience using this combination?. It seems that you would eliminated some of the feed problems, without a lot of gunsmith work.

I tried to get my first one through Brownell's. It's factory discontinued.

On Brownell's web page they did a Mauser conversion and stated the company that made the bottom metal is out of business. I assume they were referring to Whitetail Mfg.

I wound up doing the feed job myself, but Whitetail's in-line stacked mag sounded great.

Maybe someone else will pick the ball up and run.

YOu will have problems. The M48 is an intermediate length Mauser action, shorter than the standard 98 mauser length. Making the 338 win work- one would be better off making it a 308 or picking a standard length action like the VZ24.

Anytime you change anything on a Mauser, your probably asking for problems of one degree or another...I would never use a in line magazine...You can get good bottom metal from Ted Blackburn, Butch Searcy, Sunny Hill and a few others....
