I've been looking at having a left-handed .300 RUM built on a Model 70. I've gone from skeptic to believer in the round. I've talked to Mark Penrod and the folks at Gander Mountain, and both have steered me from the project. Remington apparently really modified their magazines to get the big rounds to feed (and they do feed great), but this'd be difficult and expensive to do using the Model 70 box. Mark suggested going to the .300 Weatherby, and the Gander Mountain folks suggested the MRC barreled action. The money to do a rifle was about $1,500 to $2,900 depending on who does it. At this price, I'd prefer to go with the round I like. Winchester's custom shop offers the chambering at $3,043. Any suggestions?

The .300Wby is a terrific round (I have one in a LH Weatherby Mk. V). If you can find a LH M-70 in .300Win. Mag. you can have the barrel rechambered and the magazine reworked and be up and running for a couple hundred extra dollars. There is also the .30STW (8mm Rem. Mag. necked down to .308) if you don't want venturi shoulders. The RUM conversion requires a new magazine box, follower, etc. plus some work. John Ricks is familiar with the process; you can contact him if you REALLY want a .300RUM. George

I'd have Mark build me a 300WBY and be tickled bloody pink! Chuck

George, What was the double venturi shoulder supposed to buy you? Easier feeding? I know it was a Weatherby trademark, but doesn't it reduce powder charge and also reduce shoulder bearing surface for proper headspacing (assuming you're partial resizing to allow headspacing off the shoulder instead of the belt)? Any headaches reloading the Weatherby? Appreciate the info, by the way. Steve

My pleasure. I don't remember what puffery, I mean scientific data, Roy used when he introducing the venturi shoulders as an 'improvement', but you have to remember that he wanted to his rifles AND his cartridges distinctive from everyone else's. The venturi shoulders may or may not reduce case capacity, but the .300Wby does pretty good in terms of velocities. I neck-size my cases and headspace on the shoulder. Accuracy has always been excellent. George

skl1, 1. Get yourself a left hand 375 H&H, replace the magazine box and follower with the .300 RUM parts used in the right hand model, rebarrel and restock. 2.Or take any of the left hand magnums, cut the ejection port to the rear, re-drill and tap scope hole to match the short bridge 375 H&H. Replace the ejector and bolt stop with the shorter ones used in the 375 H&H as well as the magazine box and follower for the 300RUM, rebarrel. Then you can use the stock that came with it. Good luck, Headache

Headache, Thanks. Seems like putting a new stock on the .375 might be cheaper than having the ejection port cut and scope mount holes recut, new bolt stop, etc? I'll have to price it both ways. Steve

Headache, Would the follower from a right-handed M70 feed the top round correctly into a left-handed M70, given the extractor cut out is on the opposite side? As a 'lefty' M70 fan, I'm curious if there's any problem there?
