I was action shopping at my local gun shop and spotted a Western Field 720B on the rack. The bolt looks identical to the FN action I extracted from a Sears Model 50 a couple years ago, right down to the flattened bolt knob with the under surface checkered. The Sears action has FN markings, I didn't see this feature on the 720.

Can anyone provide some insight?

The WesternField 724A used an intermediate commercial mauser action (C ring) that was barreled by Heym. The source of the action has always been a mystery. Check and see if the 720B action uses a standard length bolt or an imtermediate.

The rifle is chambered in 30-06, so I'm guessing that it is a standard length action. But I'll compare the bolt length to than of my Sears FN action.

My 720 B is also by Heym with an action made in '64. Although chambered for .30-'06, it is an intermediate length action with the magazine box opened up.

As already noted: the 720 is an intermediate length action. You'll notice that the magbox has been opened up to the front to accommodate the 30.06. They are great actions and perfect for rounds like the 7x57, 257 roberts etc.

It's been rescued from the gun store rack and is now safely at home. I compared the bolt of the 720B to that of my FN action and the 720B bolt is indeed shorter by a a 1/4" or so.

Now to decide on the caliber for this sweet action.

John, Yep. that's the one off gunbroker. I haven't received it yet, but I'll probably be replacing the stock as it's a little too Euro for my liking. However, If I decide to go 9.3x57. Euro might be fitting
