Does the safety on this rifle work backwards to what Americans are used to? If that is correct, which I think it is, can it be reversed or just replaced with a Mod. 70 style shroud.

Get used to it working the other way. It is exactly the same as my Winchester 94 when it is in the half-cock position. You pull the hammer back. You pull the safety back. Sasme thing. Practice with the rifle and it becomes second nature.
